Sunday morning I find my room has been reserved to someone else, even though I reach the front counter by 10. There are signs hung in each room, specifically stating that if I reserve my current room by 12, I can keep it. I strike a deal for another private room at the same cost. I enter to find three extra beds and a small private balcony.

Wednesday morning is bright and warm in Tulum, but I depart with an uneasy feeling in my stomach. It has nothing to do with what I ate this morning, although I did unknowingly eat much sugar ant-infested granola before realize the ants everywhere in the hotel were coming from the bag. Rather, it’s because of how my bike is running. Since reaching Tulum, my bike’s exhaust has undergone a change in its sound. A once steady purr has turned slightly poppy. Route Update

Hello friends, guests, and fellow travelers,

My goal, before I set off on this adventure, was to reach Argentina with my motorcycle before returning to the US. Having traveled 7,000+ kilometers over the past two months, I’ve learned a lot about myself and my bike. There are certain things that I realize now that weren’t that apparent 2 years ago when I began actively planning this trip.

11: The Mayan Ruins at Uxmal, Chichen Itza, Cobá, and Tulum

I wake up early Sunday feeling slightly feverish. Turning over in bed for another hour seems to cure me of my phantom illness and I begin preparing for the day’s ride to the Mayan ruins of Uxmal, in the Mexican state of Yucatan. I briefly use the phone to wish Sara a happy birthday in the US then get on the road. Mornings are always the most pleasant time of day to ride. The air is brisk and I bask in the morning sun. Last night’s rain storm has dissipated and the sky has only a handful of clouds. The drive to Uxmal is brief. The structures here are a lot larger than those of Palenque, but dense jungle atmosphere is replaced by a sparse forest.
