I am using a Raspberry Pi zero which doesn't have an ethernet (RJ45) port on it.  Is it possible to just connect the signal pins on the relays to GPIO pins on the raspberry pi and more importantly will the Mycodo software be able to switch the relays this way?  I'm pretty inexperienced with all of this stuff so i'm sorry if this is a stupid question.

Yes, so long as the relays you're using can safely use the 3.3-volt signal from the Pi's pins and also not draw more electrical current than the pins are rated for. I'm not sure what you mentioned ethernet for, as that's only used for internet connectivity.
